Does Insulin Resistance Cause Diabetes?Before we know the connection between the two terms insulin resistance and diabetes, let us see what they mean. Insulin resistance refers to the inability of the body cells to respond for the insulin. Diabetes is the condition which is characterized by increased levels of blood glucose. Now let us see how they are related.After having a meal, there will be an increased amount of glucose in the blood due to release of glucose during the process of digestion. When the levels of blood glucose starts increasing, pancreas secrete a hormone named insulin. This insulin helps the body cells to take up the blood glucose. If the body cells remain unaffected by insulin like if they show insulin resistance, the cells cannot take up glucose and the blood glucose levels tend to raise leading to diabetes. Hence, insulin resistance leads to disease such as diabetes and other diseases such as heart diseases. Individuals with insulin resistance not only show increased levels of blood glucose but also insulin.
