Here is my issue. I had a crack in my stock headers which I thought was the issue as to why my car was taking in so much air and not accelerating. I bought some aftermarket headers and put them in. It still had the same issue. The aftermarket headers had the o2 sensor longer than the stock one so I bought a longer o2 sensor and put it in yesturday, thinking it would have done the trick. Nope, still is doing the same thing. When i relaced the headers, I did not unplug the battery and when I turned the car on, I seen smoke coming out of the upper o2 sensor and my radiator overheated a bit. I replaced the radiator fluid and it did the trick. Could I have blew out my upper sensor? If so, instead of buying a new one, can i use the old lower o2 sensor or should I buy a new one?. As for the acceleration, I have been having trouble removing my fule filter for some time, and I know its old as hell. I change everthing in my car, spark plugs, wires, distribitor cab and I am unable to remove the rotor tho. When I took it to the Honda dealer they did something and screwed it in at an angle I can not get into so I cannot change that out. Also, when I replaced the headers, the bottom part which attatches to the catback has a spring, It was a long time to put that in and I am am pretty sure I put them in but not sure. I hear this sound fromt he bottom of my car. Its not loud but its this muffled sound. Could anyone help me out and tell me what I should do next? I want to avoid the macachnic and do it myself but I dont know what the next thing I should check. Please let me know. Thanks for reading.
The Catalytic converter might be clogged
What about the Airflowmeter maybe your getting the wrong mix of air/fuel which can cause poor acceleration.
If your O2 sensor was bad the check engine light would trigger as it is part of the smog system. If that isn’t tripping a code then the sensor is fine. The muffled sound you are hearing could be an exhaust leak. And from experience some engines need a little back pressure to operate correctly. Thus an exhaust leak could cause a large drop in performance. But since you put in aftermarket headers that could just be the way those headers sound. The springs you mentioned are there to force the exhaust to stay together. If you were to take it to a muffler shop they could make sure its attached correctly for under $100. Otherwise I would focus on making sure that you have that section together right and that it isn’t leaking.
Also since you had an issue over heating, check your fan and the thermostat as well. Just in case.
